Creating Backgrounds With Distress Inks

Hello friends! Today I wanted to share some tutorials on how I created four different backgrounds for my layouts with distress inks. The layouts were created using the March Main Kit from My Creative Scrapbook.

For the first layout, I began with the Ranger Tattered Rose and Victorian Velvet Distress Ink Pads and used the left edge of each of the distress ink pads and pressed down and swiped in short swipes.

Here is the completed layout for this technique:

For the second layout, I created a horizontal striped background by simply using the Ranger Tattered Rose Distress Ink Pad swiping the ink pad flatly across the white cardstock as shown below.

Here is the layout that I created with the horizontal striped technique.

For the third technique, I began with six colors of distress inks.
Ranger Tattered Rose, Victorian Velvet, Tumbled Glass, Scattered Straw, Worn Lipstick and Peeled Paint

I began with the Peeled Paint Ink Pad and began at the top edge and dabbed the ink pad with the top edge of the ink pad across the 12X12 white cardstock, as shown, until it was randomly stamped across the entire page.

I added the second color, Scattered Straw using the same technique

Next I used the Worn Lipstick

Then the Tumbled Glass Ink Pad

Followed by the Tattered Rose Ink Pad

Finally I added the Tumbled Glass Ink Pad

Here is the completed layout:

The fourth technique with distress inks is a faux woodgrain background.  I love this technique.  I began with a scoring board and a 12X12 sheet of white cardstock and Ranger Tattered Rose Distress Ink.  If you do not have a scoring board, a ruler and a bone folder will also work.  Begin by placing the white cardstock in the scoring board and scoring lines every two inches or whatever width is desired.  I chose a width of two inches for my layout.

I swiped along the scored lines from left to right placing the entire surface of the ink pad flatly along the surface.

My ink pad is not saturated with ink and is fairly dry, but I didn't want the color too saturated.

Here is my layout with this technique.

I hope you have enjoyed these tutorials and remember that practice makes perfect.  It makes the kit stretch a little further too.  Have a creative day!

A Card To Share...

Happy New Year!  I hope you have a wonderful, happy, healthy, prosperous new year.

I was asked a while back if I would create a card for someone on the other end of the globe who is battling cancer and although I am not a card maker, I felt the need to encourage someone. Apparently, the card recipient loves shoes and I thought I would create a girly card with a shoe.

Echo Park Be Mine Collection
Tim Holtz Black Soot Distress Ink
Queen and Co. Rhinestones
My Little Shoebox Mini Letter Stickers
Prima Resin Flower
American Crafts Cardstock
American Crafts Ribbon
American Crafts Foam Adhesive Squares
Marvy Uchida Black Pen
Helmar 450 Adhesive
Helmar Gemstone Glue
Silhouette Cameo
I used my sewing machine and stitched around the edge of the pink paper.  My stitching is a little crooked I see. LOL.  I then used my Silhouette Cameo and cut out a shoe design and a delicate doily design.  I then added some bling and a sheer ribbon around the heel.

Finally, I created an envelope with coordinating papers from the same collection and used my Scor-Pal and here it is!

It feels good to create for someone that needs a little boost.  Maybe in the new year I will make more cards to brighten someone's day and use up my scraps from my layouts.

Have a wonderful time celebrating the new year and see you in 2013!

A Layout To Share Of My Son

Usually I scrapbook what is on my mind that day if I don't have design team assignments.  My oldest son and his wife are on my mind a lot so I thought I would scrapbook a layout using a wainscotting technique I saw in the fall issue of Canadian Scrapbooker Magazine. The article I am referring to is  "Tool Junkie" by Christy Riopel.  Christy used the Stampin Up Simply Scored scoring tool but I have a Scor-Pal so I improvised.

Gray Cardstock
Weathered Wood Distress Ink - Tim Holtz
Scor-Pal Score Board
The gray cardstock background was scored every half inch on my Scor-Pal scoring board.

Score At Every 1/2 Inch Mark
Turn Cardstock Over
Turn the page over and notice that the scoring lines are raised on the backside so I chose to ink the back.

I then used Tim Holtz Distressed Ink in Weathered Wood and applied the ink pad directly to the paper in a downward motion being sure to cover the entire page.

Run Inkpad from top to bottom of page

Finally, I ran the Tim Holtz Distress Stain in Picket Fence over the entire scored and inked page for a more distressed, softer look.

After inking, run Tim Holtz Distress Stain Picket Fence over paper

Next, I cut the title "Son" from my Silhouette Cameo, applied Glossy Accents to the letters and then fussy cut the lighthouse and distressed all the papers.  A piece of jute was added to give more texture as well as the buttons.

I used Webster's Pages Yacht Club Collection for the papers.  The sketch that inspired me was by Pagedrafts Sketch #13.

It was a lot of fun to do and I like the way it turned out.

Have a good Saturday!
